Below is a paper I wrote when I kept getting in trouble for ditching, even though I knew it was an awful idea.
Why Kids Should Not Ditch
What is better than going to class? Going to hang out with friends? Going to the skate park, going home to take a nap, going to get food? Well, pretty much anything, right? I think all high schoolers can agree on that. But some high schoolers, have the willpower to go to class even they don't want to, whereas other high schoolers (me included) will do anything not to go to class. We all know that not going to class has some very bad consequences, some of them being: Falling behind in work, failing, and not graduating.
Falling behind in work, you can catch up, right? That’s right, but at a certain point it gets harder and harder. For example, when you don’t go once, you go the next time and get your work that you missed. You don’t do it so then you don’t go the next class. But little did you know your class was assigned a 5 paragraph essay, due next class, but you had no idea. How could you, you didn’t go to that class. It is honestly just a huge chain reaction. If you ditch it will be hard not to fall behind in class, so you might as well just go and get it over with.
Which brings me to my next point, failing. It never feels good to fail, even though we are the ones that control the outcome of our grades. It honestly depends on whether or not you decide to not be lazy and do your homework, and study, and all the good stuff. I remember I was told in 7th grade “This is where you make the choice. The choice to being an honor roll student, or being a slacker and barely scraping by.” Being a seventh grader I was like yeah yeah whatever. But looking back now, I realize that it is completely true, that is when I stopped working so hard, and realizing you did not have to do your best, you just have to do enough. Its like a gateway drug in a sense because I stopped doing work, and then got older and stopped going to class.
All of these tie together in the process of graduating? No....I meant not graduating, thats right all the stuff you put up with, and everything you stressed over, could honestly be such a waste of time. In high school, you need a certain amount of credits to graduate. When you don’t go to class, and don’t do your work, you fail, and when you fail, you don’t graduate. Because when you fail a class you don't get credit for it, and when you don't get credit for a class that means retaking it. There is only one problem with that, you can only have a certain amount of class periods. For example, if you have 8 class periods in one day but you have two different schedules depending on what day it is, you can take 16 different classes.Unfortunately for people that fall behind in credits there isn’t exactly much leeway for putting extra classes in there. So either you do summer school, or you graduate late. It really kind of sucks.
So in conclusion, if anyone asked me what the best thing to do is I would say go to class no matter what, unless you’re sick, or for some other REAL emergency. Because graduating is the first step to a happy, successful life. Going to hang out with friends, or going home to take a nap, or going to get food, or doing whatever you want to do can wait till after school. As easy as it is to walk out those doors of a school always listen to your better instinct. It will never be worth it to fall behind in class, because getting caught up is terrible.
