Service Learning: Student Teacher at Glenwood Springs Middle School
For my service learning I worked with a 7th grade math class at Glenwood Springs Middle School. The teacher I helped was Mrs.Lobach, and her math class was a class of 7th graders that weren't quite up to par with the rest of the grade, so this class was to try and help them catch up so they could go to highschool after their 8th grade year and not get held back. Being a student helper taught me a lot of patients. Working with kids that don't understand things as well as others was actually a lot of fun. They learned and got taught differently then I had ever seen. I was used to teachers teaching you lesson then giving you a work sheet, but nope, not with class. It was fun because I actually got to help them. It made me feel good because I knew that was actually making a difference with these kids, and giving them hope that they would move on. I loved the fact that I got to share with them my knowledge, not only share, but pass it on.
I also work at a kids camp called EarthBeat Summer Music and Art Camp. This year will be my 14 or 15 year at the camp, I started going when I was either 3 or 4 and then became a staff member when I was 12. I love giving back to the kids at the different camps, every kid just loves it and looks up to us staff members. It feels good that I am helping create memories for young kids, because I remember how much I loved the staff members, and the camp, and how I looked up to the staff members, and idolized them. It feels good that the kids are looking up to me like that as well.
